Is your coffee too weak or too bitter? The usual culprit is the coffee to water ratio. This free coffee ratio calculator tells you exactly how many grams of coffee and how much water to use for pour over, French press, AeroPress, espresso, moka pot, and cold brew, plus the right grind size, water temperature, and brew time.

1 level tablespoon of ground coffee is roughly 7 g. For consistent results, use a kitchen scale.

What Is a Coffee Ratio?

A coffee ratio compares the weight of ground coffee with the weight of water. A 1:15 ratio means 1 gram of coffee for every 15 grams (ml) of water, for example 15 g of coffee and 225 ml of water. The smaller the second number, the stronger the coffee.

Coffee Ratio Chart by Brew Method

MethodTypical ratioExample
Pour over / V601:15 – 1:1715 g coffee : 225 ml water
French press1:12 – 1:1520 g coffee : 300 ml water
AeroPress1:12 – 1:1615 g coffee : 180 ml water
Espresso1:218 g coffee : 36 g espresso
Moka pot1:7 – 1:1015 g coffee : 120 ml water
Cold brew concentrate1:5 – 1:8100 g coffee : 800 ml water, dilute to serve
Drip coffee maker1:15 – 1:1760 g coffee : 1 liter water

How to Dial In the Taste

  • Too weak or sour? Use a lower ratio (for example 1:14 instead of 1:16) or grind finer.
  • Too bitter or heavy? Use a higher ratio or grind coarser.
  • Change only one variable at a time so you know what improved the cup.

Measuring Without a Scale

  • 1 level tablespoon of ground coffee ≈ 7 grams
  • 1 level teaspoon of ground coffee ≈ 2.5 grams
  • 1 US cup = about 240 ml; a typical coffee mug holds 250–350 ml

Spoon measurements vary with grind size and bean density, so treat them as a starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many grams of coffee per cup?

For a 240 ml (8 oz) cup at 1:15, use about 16 grams of coffee, a little over 2 level tablespoons.

Should I measure water by weight or volume?

One milliliter of water weighs almost exactly one gram, so either works for brewing water. Espresso output is measured by weight because of the crema.

What is the golden ratio for coffee?

Many brewing guides recommend a "golden ratio" of around 1:15 to 1:18 for filter coffee. Start at 1:16 and adjust to taste.
