About the Hijri (Islamic) Calendar

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar. Each month begins with the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, so a Hijri year has about 354 or 355 days, roughly 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan and Eid move about 11 days earlier every year.

The calendar was established during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, who chose the Hijrah (the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE) as year one.

Why Results May Differ by One Day

This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official astronomical calendar of Saudi Arabia. Many countries start Ramadan, Eid, and other months based on local moon sighting or their own calculations, so the official date in your country may differ by one day. For everyday purposes such as finding your Hijri birthday, the converter is accurate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my Hijri birthday?

Select Gregorian → Hijri, enter your date of birth, and press Convert. If you were born after sunset, your Hijri date is actually the next day, because an Islamic day begins at sunset.

What is my age in Hijri years?

When you convert a past date, the result shows your age in Hijri years. It is usually slightly higher than your Gregorian age because Hijri years are shorter.

Which years are supported?

The Umm al-Qura calendar covers 1300–1600 AH (about 1882–2174 CE). Outside that range, the converter uses the tabular Islamic calendar, a mathematical approximation.
